Ah, Easter in New York! Warm weather returns to the city and with it, all of the incredibly eclectic, strange, and talented New Yorkers! I have photographed the Easter Hat & Bonnet Festival in NYC for years, getting one of my most unique and famous images there- Chicken and the Cop (pictured above)
This workshop is great for locals and those visiting New York who want to dust off their cameras and shake off the winter blues. This event is a wonderful way to engage with the local NYC community, something we need especially in these times of intense turmoil and division. Those who are interested in learning how to make unique portraits and interesting juxtapositions are encouraged to attend.
We will meet at 10am on Fifth Avenue and 49th Street and make our way uptown with the parade. We will spend time photographing at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, on Fifth Avenue between 50th and 51st Streets (where I got my Chicken and Cop photo). This is great location with an interesting background.
Lots of time will also be spent photographing the sidelines. I find that often, the most interesting photos can be made in the more quiet, less obvious locations.
Fifth Avenue offers some incredible light in the afternoon so we will stay there until around 2pm. We will then break for a short lunch and get back to photographing. The parade runs until 4pm, but students may want to stick around and shoot until that end-of-the-day golden light. I will be shooting until sunset.
In addition to the day of shooting, I will also host a 2 hour Zoom critique for students to get feedback on their work from the day.
